Death of Barbara Northeimer Fish

On behalf of the officers and members of the West Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, we extend our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of Barabara Northeimer Fish who passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016. She was the wife of Compatriot Robert B. “Bob” Fish Jr. who is the Secretary/Treasurer of the Captain James Neal Chapter of Parkersburg, WV and is a Past President of the West Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

Barbara Northeimer Fish, of North Hills passed away peacefully at home on December 14, 2016, after a long illness.

She was born in Coatesville, PA, on January 4, 1947, to the late Ward and Mary (Thompson) Northeimer. Mrs. Fish grew up in Coatesville and graduated from Horace Scott High School. She earned a BA in Spanish from Grove City College and an MA in Spanish from Westchester State University. She taught at Kennett High School.

In 1974 she married Robert B. Fish, Jr. and moved to.Orange, Texas. They were transferred to Parkersburg in 1978. In addition to raising her family, she served the community by providing effective leadership to many volunteer organizations. She was a member of the Junior League of Parkersburg (President), James Wood Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (Regent), Parkersburg High School LSIC (Chairman), Parkersburg Area Community Foundation (Chairman), P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma Education Sorority (honorary member), Mid-Ohio Valley Fellowship Home (Secretary), Mid-Ohio Valley Sail and Power Squadron (Commander), North Hills Garden Club (President), Wood County Republican Executive Committee (State Secretary and alternate delegate to 3 national conventions).

She was a ninth generation lifelong Presbyterian, a Ruling Elder at First Presbyterian Church, and was recognized as West Virginia Church School Teacher of the Year in 1985.

In 2000 Mrs. Fish was appointed by the Governor to a term on the West Virginia State Board of Education, serving in many positions, including President. She served as a member of the State School Building Authority and the State Commission on Professional Teaching Standards (Chairman). She was selected by the National Institute of Medicine to study food and nutrition in schools. She was co-author of the book “Nutrition Standards for Foods in Schools: Leading the Way Toward Healthier Youth” and was honored by West Virginia Medical Association with their Health and Wellness Leadership Award and by the National Association of State Boards of Education with their Distinguished Service Award.

She is survived by Bob, her husband of 42 years and by their sons, Robert, III of Anderson SC and Ward and his wife Carli of Aurora CO, and her brother Jeffrey Northeimer and his wife Oga of Troutdale OR, many cousins and friends, all of whom she treasured.

A funeral service will be conducted at First Presbyterian Church, 1341 Juliana Street, Parkersburg, at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 17 by the Rev. Michael Seely, Pastor, and the Rev. Carmen LeBerge, President of the Presbyterian Lay Committee. A private burial service will be conducted at the Penningtonville Presbyterian Cemetery, Atglen PA. Visitation with the family will be held at First Presbyterian Church from 2 to 4 PM and from 6 to 8 PM on Friday, December 16.
