The Fort Henry Chapter and the Wheeling Chapter, DAR presented a memorial service on September 1, 2017 at the Foreman’s Massacre monument in McMechen, WV to mark the 240th anniversary of the event. Participating were McMechen mayor Gregg Wolfe, Central District VPG Robert B. Fish, Jr., WVSSAR president Bill Lester, Debi Smith, regent, Wheeling DAR and Jay Frey, president Fort Henry Chapter. Special guests included descendants of Foreman’s company including compatriots Donald Brown (Capt. James Neal Chapter) and Rick Greathouse (Daniel Boone Chapter). Twelve color guardsmen representing WVSSAR chapters Daniel Boone, Fort Henry, Capt. James Neal, Point Pleasant and Capt. Ralph Stewart together with Ebenezer Zane Chapter, OHSSAR and George Washington Chapter, PASSAR presented the colors and fired a musket salute. Wreaths were presented at the monument. The WVSSAR Board of Managers (BOM) will meet on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at the Econ-o-Lodge, 1909 Harper Road (WV Route 3), Beckley, WV, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. A lot of business will be discussed at this meeting so maximum participation is encouraged.

Chapter Presidents are asked to provide a chapter activity report that covers the period since the last BOM meeting in April. They are encouraged to attend the meeting or send a representative. However, if no one from their chapter will attend, they should e-mail Joe Khare, WVSSAR Secretary-Treasurer, at FrankK5600@aol.com their chapter report before the meeting.

General Andrew Lewis Chapter Meeting

Confederate Spy Nancy Hart, portrayed by Dovie Dunn, will be featured at the July 13 meeting of the General Andrew Lewis Chapter. Hart’s spying activities in the Mountain State during the Civil War were thrill-seeking.

Make plans now to see this outstanding one-woman performance. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at the Enslow Park Presbyterian Church, 1338 Enslow Blvd., Huntington.

Refreshments will be served and the performance is open to the public.

Parking:
Parking for patients and visitors is available in the parking garage and other designated parking areas. Signs are posted to assist with direction of traffic and parking areas. Volunteers operate a shuttle service to and from the parking garage and outlying parking areas to the entrance of the outpatient area.

June 10, Saturday @ 11am – Flag Certificate will be presented at Flat Top, WV.

June 14, Wednesday @ 6:14pm – Flag retirement ceremony at Fort Randolph. Gather up your tattered, torn and worn US flags, bring them to Fort Randolph where they will be retired properly with honor.

June 15, Thursday @ 6pm – Doug Wood will be presenting “Cultural Crossroads: Establishing the 17th Century Fur Trade in the Trans-Allegheny Region” in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston. The program will begin at 6:00pm and it free and open to the public.

June 17, Saturday @ 1pm – Memorial service for Larry Freshwater who was a 24 year member of Daniel Boone Chapter, chapter President, a State officer and board member. The memorial service will be held at Larry’s graveside in Eventide Cemetery in Spencer. Directions: If coming from Ripley, turn left on Route 14 at Go Mart in Spencer, proceed about a mile to Eventide Cemetery on the left. If driving from Spencer turn right on to Route 14 at the Go Mart, proceed about a mile, turn left into Eventide Cemetery.
